This is probably the hardest type of origami I've made before. Just to make a simple pencil holder, you need around 800 units, depending on the size. It takes about 20 pieces of paper. Even though each unit takes only 20 seconds to make, assembling it takes about another 3-4 hours.
Here's a tutorial on how to make this swan http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-origami-a-swan-using-hundreds-of-paper-triangles-78290/
The fastest I've ever made one would be in three days, but only because it was over the summer and I had nothing to do at all. It takes a lot of patience and commitment, yet I have no idea how I'm able to do it.
You can make just about anything if you make a pattern for it. A lot of Japanese stores (like Daiso, they have ones for $1.50) have kits for mini animals and such. Those take a lot less time and they sometimes have better patterns.

is Daiso in Japan? i can't find it on google.
No, they have them in America :) You can't find it on Google? I just did and the main site came up: http://www.daiso-sangyo.co.jp/english/
Do you have instructions on how to some of these 3d origami structures. I have to make a 3d golden venture project for art class and I can't find instructions for anything but swans.
No, I created the color pattern for these 3D origami pieces. Coming up with a pattern for something like a pencil holder is easy - I started with a base of 36 and kept building until I thought it was the right height. If you're looking for something more advanced, they have books you can purchase online that include animals and other various things.
could you post instructions for how to make some models?(also, the models are really pretty.)
Hi,
I just started doing golden venture origami, and when I assemble the individual triangle pieces they tear. How can I prevent that from happening?
